Thomas Widmann joined Wellington Partners in 2003 as a Venture Partner. In April 2005, he became a General Partner on the Wellington Life Science team and continues to focus - as an active venture capitalist - on Life Science investments.
With Hesperion in 1996 and Actelion in 1997, Thomas co-founded two highly successful Life Science start-up companies. At Actelion, he was the company's first CEO until 1999 and played an instrumental role in its IPO and secondary offering, raising a total of CHF 670 million. From 1987 to 1996, Thomas served as vice president and head of international cardiovascular clinical research at Hoffmann-La Roche, where he brought three drugs to international markets. Prior to joining Hoffman-La Roche, Thomas had spent six years at the University of California at San Diego as an assistant professor of medicine (cardiology). He formed his first company, Triton Technology, in San Diego in the early 1980s.
Thomas studied Medicine and Computer Science at the Universities of Heidelberg and Paris, and holds a doctorate in Medicine from the University of Heidelberg. He earned his specialization in cardiology at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.
